About Indian River Citrus: Why's it so special?

Well, a lot of folk's have asked that same question when seeing fruit from other groves for less expensive prices. I'm here to tell if there's a BIG difference.

For over 100 years, Indian River Citrus has received worldwide recognition and the name "Indian River" is protected by both state and federal law. Florida's unique growing conditions - rich fertile soil, ample water, sunny days and warm ocean breezes - have proven to be the ideal conditions for growing the most prized citrus in ther world! In fact, Florida oranges are 25% heavier than those from other states; thinner skin and more juice. Some other states have beautiful fruit on the outside, thick skin, and almost no taste on the inside. Florida fruit has a few scars (called wind scars on the outside from the sand from the east coast whipping throuhg the orange groves causing those scars), thin skin, but most of all, superior taste on the inside! We're sure you'll be delighted that our Guarantee not only extends from delivery, but complete eating enjpoyment and overall satisfaction.

But beware: not all Florida fruit is Indian River fruit. It's still good, but not as good. For meat lovers, it's like comparing a regular cut of beef from your grovery store to USDA Grade A Black Angus beef. Sometimes in life, you do get what you pay for.

Quick Health Facts: You knew Florida citrus was good for you, but did you know:

- Florida oranges are 25% heavier than those grown elsewhere.

- Florida oranges and grapefruit contain more nutrients per calorie than apples, bananas, grapes or pears. These nutrients include potassium, calcium, folate, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin C, phosphorous, magnesium and copper.

- Unlike many of these other fruits, citrus does not ripen any further after it is picked. The skin color may change, but the inside does not. That is why tree ripened citrus tastes better than citrus picked before it's fully ripe so it will have a long cooler storage life.

"Florida orange juice, as part of a healthy diet, helps in the fight against cancer."
-American Red Cross

"Florida grapefruit and 100% pure Florida grapefruit juice are certified as part of a heart-healthy diet."
-American Heart Association

"Adequate folic acid, the vitamin B in orange juice, may reduce the risk of certain birth defects."
-March of Dimes

- Pink Grapefruit contains more iron and more vitamin A and C than the White Grapefruit

- An 8 oz. glass of Florida orange supplies 100% or more of the recommended daily value of vitamin C, a valuable antioxidant. Scientists believe that antioxidants may counteract harmful molecules called "free radicals", which they believe contribute to the onset of several major diseases.

- Vitamin C also helps maintain collagen, the substance that helps the human body repair body tissue.

- Fresh Florida oranges and grapefruits contain dietary fiber (more than any of the other top 20 fruits and vegetables including apples, bananas, strawberries, broccoli, potatoes and green beans), including soluble fiber. Fiber aids in digestion and elimination, and when part of a low fat diet rich in fruits and vegetables containing soluble fiber may also reduce the risk of heart disease.

- Florida citrus juices like orange juice are natural sources of potassium, and all citrus fruits are sodium and cholesterol-free.

- While some prescription medications may interact with grapefruit juice, most do not. Medications that may lead to interactions with grapefruit juice (only) are mostly limited to cholesterol-lowering, calcium channel blocker, antihistamine and psychiatric medications. The effect it usually has is increasing the dosage. Scientist are now looking into the possibility of using this as a positive by lowering the amount of expensive medication a patient has to take by prescribing less in conjunction with grapefruit juice. Potential interactions vary per individual. We can provide more information in regards to the medications that interact with grapefruit juice as well as alternative medications that should allow for safe treatment with no need to give up the health and nutritional benefits of grapefruit juice.
